WORKSHOP or FOLLOWER OF FRANCESCO LAURANA, (or unknown artist in Ferrara, ca. 1465-1470)
Ferry II de Lorraine (1417-1470), Comte de Vaudémont, Lord of Joinville 1458. Medal. Bronze, 72mm. ALTRA.TI.FERO.VNA.TI.DIRO, Bust right wearing a tall, wide cap, a folded noted tucked into the broad brim, rev. Incuse double-edged axe head. The legend warning the viewer that "I will tell you one thing and do another" is amplified by the double-edged axe on the reverse. Hill 137 = Pollard 73 - "only known specimen". The model for this cast is the National Gallery specimen. Although published as an unknown sitter, the portrait is that of Ferry II as can be seen by his medal by Francesco Laurana dated 1464. The tucked-in folded note is a detail that can be seen in other portraits of the period. Pierced, small casting flaw at 5:00. Extremely Fine. Ex Baldwin Sale 57-58, September 23-24, 2008, lot 799 - "seemingly a later cast, good very fine with brown patination, pierced through top fold of hat, and flaw (between O of FERO and doublet). This cast is extremely close to the Kress specimen, even to the zig-zag line through the centre of the brush."
