Caterina Sforza Riario (1463-1509), Countess of Forli and Lady of Imola. Medal, Florence ca. 1488. Bronze, 73mm. CATHARINA.SF.DERIARIO. FORLIVII.IMOLAE Q C, Bust left wearing widow's veil with queue hanging down her back, and square-cut bodice, rev. VICTORIAM. FAMA.SEQVETVR, Winged Victory in a girdled tunic, holding a palm frond and driving right a cart drawn by two winged horses, the Sforza biscione on the side of the cart. Hill 1014. A bold and often fierce ruler who took impetuous actions to safeguard her possessions and defend her dominions, Caterina was also a great seeker of knowledge, having a keen interest in alchemy, cosmetics, and medicine. Married three times and known to have numerous lovers, Caterina, according to her biographer Pier Desiderio Pasolini, could not live long without love. She was also one of the few women discussed at length by Machiavelli. A Very Fine old cast.
