ATTRIBUTED TO NICCOLÒ SPINELLI, called NICCOLÒ FIORENTINO (1430-1514)
Innocent VIII (1484-1492) -- Giovanni Battista Cibo. Medal, cast, Florence 1485. Bronze, 82mm. INNOCENTII.IANVENSIS.VIII.PONT.MAX.MCCCCLXXXIV, Capped bust left wearing cope with ornate orphrey decorated with scenes from the life of Christ, rev. IVSTITIA. .PAX. .COPIA., allegory of Justice, Peace and Abundance. Hill 927. Innocent VIII is known for launching - at the instigation of German Inquisitor Heinrich Kramer -- a persecution of those accused of witchcraft, having the dubious distinction of confirming Tomas de Torquemada as Spain's Grand Inquisitor, institutionalizing simony at the papal court, and offering Charles VIII of France the kingdom of Naples in 1489 after excommunicating and deposing Ferdinando I d'Aragona (because the Neapolitan king refused to pay his feudal dues to the papacy). Although Innocent settled his quarrel with Ferdinando, and revoked the bans before his death, his initial offer to Charles led to the ruinous Italian War of 1494-1495. Rich glossy coffee-brown patina. Extremely Fine.
