Miscellaneous Collier Trophy Award Letters and Papers. Includes: *) May 6, 1936, one-page typed letter, Shell Petroleum letterhead, from J.H. Doolittle to Charles L. Lawrence, Chairman Collier Committee informing him he is preparing brief to propose Shell Union Oil as 1935 awardee for its work on iso-octane. Secretarial signature; *) March 16, 1931 typed letter signed by Floyd Smith, Floyd Smith Safety Chute co. to the NAA bemoaning receiving no credit in the 1926 award (which was for the development of the Free Type Manually Operated Parachute); *) extensive claim for award of the 1926 Collier Trophy on behalf of Grover Loening for development of the Loening Amphibian with 10 B&W photos of the aircraft; *) unsigned file copy of May 27, 1944 letter from Orville Wright who says "In so far as I know there is not and never has been a "Collier Trophy," going on to explain that Robert J. Collier named the award the "Aero Club of America Trophy" and Wright does not know whether the NAA ever took any formal action to change the name to the Collier Trophy; *) two copies of Frederick R. Nelly's paper "The Robert J. Collier Trophy Its Origin and Its Purpose", *) miscellaneous typed remarks, etc. Fine.
