1940 Collier Trophy Award. Large collection of letters to the Committee or NAA, all typed and one-page unless noted: 1) May 26, 1941, US Senate letterhead signed by Chairman Robert R. Reynolds, re: submission of nominations; 2) May 27, 1941, Congress of the US letterhead, signed by Jennings Randolph, nominating Dr. L.S Adams inventor of the airmail pick-up device, with two copies of Randolph's article "The R.F.D. Grows Wings"; 3) June 11, Navy Dept., signed by Rear Admiral J.H. Towers informing the NAA that the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics considers no single achievement in 1940 outstanding and so is making no nomination; 4) June 3, signed by businessman and fitness guru Bernarr Macfadden who suggests Billy Mitchell posthumously, Al Williams and Robert Hinckley; 5) June 18, Civil Aeronautics Board, signed by Chairman Harllee Branch who suggests the Civilian Pilot Training Program for 1940 winner, with copy of response; 6) July 25, signed by Grover Loening nominates W.T. Piper, Fred Weick, and Harlan Fowler for the 1940 award; 7) Four pages, August 16, Civil Aeronautics Board, signed by Harllee Branch who gives a brief on the Civilian Pilot Training Program; 8) Sept. 6 letter in which Branch refers back to last; 9) Five pages, Sept. 29, signed by Henry A. Berliner submitting Fred E. Weick as awardee and giving support information on Weick; 10) Nov. 21, White House, signed by Presidential Secretary Stephen Early who informs the NAA that the President would not be able to broadcast a message regarding the Collier Trophy, with copy of NAA request letter; 11) Nov. 8, White House, signed by Edwin Watson, Secretary to the President, who expresses the President's delight at honorary life membership in the NAA and discusses the presentation of the Collier Trophy to Dr. Moss, with copy of the NAA's letter to FDR; 12) Nov. 11, Mayo Clinic letterhead, signed by W. Randolph Lovelace II, MD assaying as far as he knows the Collier Trophy is on display at Washington National Airport, with copy of NAA letter asking for him to send the Trophy in time for the presentation; 13) Dec. 2, signed by Laurance S. Rockefeller who thanks the NAA for the invitation to the 1940 Collier Trophy Award presentation but is unable to attend because of a trip to Texas, with copy of invitation letter; 14) Dec. 3, Navy Dept., signed by H.R. Stark who expresses delight at the invitation to attend the award ceremonies, with copy of invitation letter; 15) Dec. 5, General Electric letterhead, signed by C.E. Wilson, President who accepts the invitation to 1940 Collier Trophy Award presentation, with copy of invitation letter with original penciled edits and additions; 16) Dec. 5, North American Aviation signed by J.H. Kindelberger who regrets he will not be able to attend the presentation ceremonies at the White House, with copy of invitation letter; 17) Dec. 5, handwritten letter, Hotel Woodstock, NY letterhead, from Sanford Moss who along with the Army Air Corps was the 1940 awardee who tells the NAA he will be at the ceremony as asks whether he should "wear an ordinary business suit?"; 18) Dec. 1, War Dept., signed by Brig. Gen. Oliver P. Echols who accepts invitation to the ceremonies, with copy of invitation letter; 19) Dec. 13, Navy Dept., signed by Rear Admiral J.H. Towers who appreciates the invitation to the Dec. 17 ceremonies but notes "I am sure you realize that under present conditions firm commitments can not be made so far in advance.", with copy of invitation letter; 20) Dec. 26, Transcontinental & Western Air letterhead, signed Jack Frye who expresses regrets at not being able to attend the ceremonies on Dec. 17; 21) 11-page proposal of William T.
