[Civil War; Texas History]: Eber Worthington Cave (1831-1904). Journalist, civic promoter and Texas politician, Cave was born in Philadelphia, PA and worked as a printer in New Jersey. He moved to Texas in 1853 and a year later bought the Nacogdoches Chronicle. As editor, he opposed reopening the African slave trade and supported Sam Houston's bid for the office of governor. In 1859, Houston appointed Cave Secretary of State. Opposed to secession, Cave resigned in the early months of 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a CSA Major. In his later years, he was an executive with railroad and shipping companies. Autograph Document Signed "E.W. Cave Major Chf B.S. Troops" (Chief Bureau State). One page, blue, lined, 7 ¾ x 7 ½", Head Quarters, Bureau of State Troops Dist. of Texas, New Mexico & Arizona letterhead, Houston, Oct. 12, 1863. Special Order No. 95. By command of Major General J. Bankhead Magruder, the quartermaster at Nacogdoches is ordered to call upon the quartermaster at "R&R" for supplies for Major Bloomfield. Cave signs below. Stain in left margin from old affixement, nibbling at top. Good.
