[Civil War; Texas History]: Eber Worthington Cave (1831-1904). Journalist, civic promoter and Texas politician, Cave was born in Philadelphia, PA and worked as a printer in New Jersey. He moved to Texas in 1853 and a year later bought the Nacogdoches Chronicle. As editor, he opposed reopening the African slave trade and supported Sam Houston's bid for the office of governor. In 1859, Houston appointed Cave Secretary of State. Opposed to secession, Cave resigned in the early months of 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a CSA Major. In his later years, he was an executive with railroad and shipping companies. Autograph Document Signed "E.W. Cave Major Chief Bureau State Troops". One-page, lined, 7 5/8 x 8 3/8", Headquarters Bureau State Troops, Houston, Nov. 1, 1863. By command of Major General J. Bankhead Magruder, Major F.B. Sublett, commanding at Nacogdoches is ordered to send five infantry officers for duty at the quartermasters Dept. Cave signs below. Some age toning, small top nick, trifold. Very Good.
