Pope Pius IX. Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti (1792-1878; Pontifex 1846-1878). Longest reigning elected pope in the history of the Catholic Church, convened first Vatican Council; during his reign the Papal States and Rome were lost to the nascent Kingdom of Italy. Papal Letter of Pius IX signed by Cardinal Niccola Clarelli Parracciani. 16 x 10 7/8", 21-lines in brown ink, Roma, June 3, 1870. Red seal stamp of Pius IX lower left. Cardinal Parracciani (1799-1872) participated in the Papal Conclave of 1846 which elected Pius IX, and the First Vatican Council, 1869-1870. He was Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals and Secretary of the Roman Curia; he was made Arch-Priest of St. Peter's Basilica in 1870. Very Fine. Handsomely matted with engraving of the Pontifex and gilt framed, 22 x 26 ½".
