Pope Gregorio XVI. Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari (1765-1846; Pontifex 1831-1846). Strongly conservative and traditionalist, sought to strengthen the religious and political authority of the papacy; he encouraged missionary activity abroad and issued a strong condemnation of the slave trade in 1839; but his harsh repression and draconian measures against the revolutionary insurrections and demands for liberal reform and financial extravagance left him very unpopular domestically. Papal Bull (Bolla papale), 1844. Handwritten by the Papal Chancery, parchment, 22 7/8 x 14". Some letters calligraphically ornamented. With cord and lead bulla. Small identification card stapled at upper right corner. Intact and Very Fine.
