Pope Gregorio XV. Alessandro Ludovisi (1554-1623; Pontifex 1621-1623). A learned theologian and reformer; aided HRE Ferdinand II and the Catholic League against the Protestants, and Sigismund III Vasa of Poland-Lithuania against the Sublime Porte; issued the last papal ordinance against witchcraft; influential in bringing the Bolognese artist Guercino to Rome, which was instrumental in the development of high Baroque style. Papal Bull (Bolla papale), May 1623. Handwritten in scrittura bollatica Latin, parchment, 27 x 17 ¼". Ornate and embellished name of the pope and legend head, with floral border at left. Original cord, no seal. Very Fine.
