Marshall, George Catlett (1880-1959). Third U.S. Secretary of Defense, Sept. 21, 1950-Sept. 12, 1951; Secretary of State, 1947-1949; President of the Red Cross; Army Chief of Staff during World War II. As Secretary of State, Marshall advocated for a significant U.S. economic and political committee to the recovery of post-War Europe including the plan that bore his name, the Marshall Plan; his efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. Document signed "GC Marshall". 7x9" type letter on Office of the General of the Army stationery, 13 Sept. 1951. Writing to Senator McFarland, Marshall, in his first day of retirement from being Secretary of Defense, thanks him for his comments on the Senate floor yesterday [in regard to Marshall's tenure as Secretary and his replacement Bob Lovett]. Very Fine. Accompanied by a copy of Gen. Omar Bradley's April 17, 1951 address regarding America's "relatively small-scale military operations in Korea".
