Mackay, John William (1831-1902). Irish-American industrialist, one of the four Bonanza Kings, whose wealth came from the Comstock Lode, founded Commercial Cable Co. in 1884 with James Gordon Bennett, Jr., and founded Postal Telegraph Co. two years later. Autograph Letter Signed "JW Mackay". Two pages, on folded lined paper, Jan. 4, [18]77. Writing to Dear Ramsden [?], Mackay notes that his letter is good and will have it published in the Enterprise. "What in the devil can an old timer suggest to a Newspaper Man with your reputation." Mackay ends with "Weather here is charming Joyfully JW Mackay". Pencil notation on bottom of blank page. Fine-VF; also Check for $155 drawn on the Bank of California, Virginia Nevada, Feb. 3, 1871 signed by Mackay. Cut cancelled. Very Fine. [2]
