LaGuardia, Fiorello Henry. Irascible, energetic and charismatic 99th Mayor of New York City for 3 terms, 1934-1945; Pro-New Deal liberal progressive Republican, acclaimed as one of the greatest mayors in U.S. history. Document Signed "F H LaGuardia" as Mayor. 8 1/3 x 10 ½" typed letter on NYC Office of the Mayor stationery, Nov. 3, 1943. Writing to Senator McFarland, LaGuardia thanks him for his thoughtful letter of Oct. 30. "No doubt you know I have been most unhappy for a long time. I have been trying to get into the army. Naturally, as a soldier, I have no preference. I would just as soon go to the Pacific or be in the big push as anywhere else. The C. in C. however believes I should remain and clean the streets of New York, so like a good soldier, I guess I will have to do it. At any rate, it is good, isn't it, to know that when then need good men they must look around for the Arizona brand. I am rather proud of it." Attached copy of letter from McFarland, and from James F. Byrnes, Office of War Mobilization. Very Fine.
