Johnson, Andrew. Seventeenth President of the United States (1865-1869), Vice President under Lincoln assumed the presidency after the latter's assassination; favored quick restoration of seceded states to the Union without any protection for former slaves which led to conflict with Congress and his impeachment - he was acquitted in the Senate by one vote, the Alaska Purchase took place during his office. Document Signed "Andrew Johnson" as President. Folio, vellum, Presidential heading with eagle, July 23, 1867. Appointment of Thomas Claffey to the rank of Captain by Brevet "for gallant and meritorious conduct at the battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia December 13, 1862, where killed". Signed by Johnson bottom right, and by Edwin M Stanton as Secretary of War at middle, banners and war trophies below. Recorder's note upper left signed by Edward D. Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General U.S. Army. Very Fine. Attractively framed, 22 x 26".
