Girard, Stephen (1750-1831). French-born American philanthropist and banker; personally saved the U.S. government from financial collapse during the War of 1812; became of the wealthiest people in America; childless he devoted much of his fortune to philanthropy, notably the education and welfare of orphans. Letter Signed "Stephen Girard. One page, 8 x 9 ¾ ", Philadelphia, July 15, 1818. Girard asks LeRoy Bayard & Co, New York to deliver "the enclosed" to a Mr. Mailliard if he is in NY otherwise forward. Boldly inked, clearly signed. Very Fine.
