Giannini, Amadeo Pietro (1870-1949). Italian-American banker; founder of the Bank of Italy which became the Bank of America; credited as the inventor of many modern banking practices; Giannini opened the Bank of Italy in San Francisco, October 17, 1904, housed in a converted saloon, it was a new bank for hardworking immigrants that other banks wouldn't serve; following the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fire, Giannini set up a temporary bank, moving the monies from the vault hidden in a garbage truck to San Mateo, 18 miles away. Document Signed "A.P. Giannini as Secretary of the San Mateo Bank. Folio, August 6, 1907. Partially typed Resolution by the Board of Directors of the San Mateo Bank for the release of mortgages on payment of indebtedness. Giannini signs that this is a "full, true and correct copy of the resolution duly and unanimously passed and adopted at a meeting of the Board of Directors", and then signs again at bottom. Notary seal; also Draft for $25,000 on Bank of Italy signed by Giannini "A P Giannini V.P." in blue-green. Both Very Fine. [2]
