Barkley, Alben William (1877-1956). 35th Vice President of the United States, 1949-1953, Senator from Kentucky, Senate Minority Leader. Document Signed "Alben W. Barkley" as Senator. 8x10 ½" typed letter on Senate stationery, dated Jan. 4, 1946, to Senator Ernest W. McFarland. Barkley thanks McFarland for his sympathetic message on the death of Barkley's mother, and signs below in blue; also Farley, James Aloysius (1888-1976). First Irish Catholic politician in US history to achieve success on national level, Postmaster General, 1933-1940, Chairman of the Democratic Committee, chairman of the NY Democratic Party. Document Signed "Jim". Typed letter, 7 ¼ x 10 ½ " on his stationery, June 7, 1943 thanking Senator McFarland for his note in regard to Wirt Bowman's conformation. Accompanied by a 9x7" B&W news photo of Farley meeting with FDR in Hyde Park, 1940. A few small edge tears at bottom of Barkley letter.
