Showman, businessman and politician; promoted celebrated hoaxes and human curiosities such as the Fiji Mermaid and General Tom Thumb through his Barnum American Museum; established Barnum and Bailey's Circus in 1880 with James A. Bailey, mayor of Bridgeport CT (1875-1876). Document Signed "P.T. Barnum". Partially printed folio, one page, Fairfield County Ct, May 18, 1863 for the sale of a parcel of land by Barnum and his wife to Berkley and Charles A. Hotchkiss. Barnum signs above the signature of his wife Charity Barnum (née Hallett). Internal Revenue Conveyance stamp and small paper seals below. Light soiling along creaseline and tiny junction holes. Fine.
