Custer, George Armstrong. Large Lot of Custer Autographed Envelopes and Portions of Envelopes With Custer's Autograph, or Fragments of his Autograph. 1) Custer Autographed Envelope. "Fifth Avenue Hotel / New York" is embossed at upper left. Postmarked New York, "APR 13, (no year indicated, but an archivist has penciled "1866" near the top)." The address is written in brown ink by George Armstrong Custer to "Mrs. General Custer / Monroe / Mich." Three cent stamp affixed. About half of the envelope, including the address, is lightly to moderately stained. 2) Similar Custer Autographed Envelope. "Fifth Avenue Hotel / New York" is embossed at upper left. Postmarked New York, "MAY 11, (no year legible, but an archivist has penciled "1870 / 1871 / 72" near the left side)." The address is written in brown ink by George Armstrong Custer to "Mrs. General Custe [the last letter of "Custer" is missing] / Monroe / Mich." Two three cent stamps affixed. The right side of the envelope is missing. 3) Custer Autographed Postal Envelope. "K. C. Barker & Co." / 74 and 76 Jefferson Avenue, DETROIT, Mich." is printed in red above a red four story building. Postmarked Detroit, Michigan "DEC [?] 27", (no year indicated, but probably 1870-1871. The address is written in brown ink by George Armstrong Custer to "Mrs. General Cus[the last three letters missing] / Fort Leavenworth / Kansa[last letter missing]. The right end of the address, is missing, otherwise quite appealing. K. C. Barker was the Mayor of Detroit. Custer took Barker and his friends on a buffalo hunt in 1869. 4) Custer Autographed Envelope. "PHOENIX HOTEL" is printed at upper left. Postmarked Lexington, Kentucky, September 17, no year indicated. The address is written in brown ink by George Armstrong Custer to "Mrs. General Cust[the last two letters are missing] / Care of Capt Yat[probably George Yates] / Tayler Banen[?] / [last line illegible]." The right end of the envelope, and some of the writing, is missing. 5) Fragment of an envelope with a partial Custer signature. Most of the "C" and the remaining letters are legible, as is "Mich." Three cent stamp affixed. Archivist indicates 1865 in pencil. 6) Fragment of an envelope with a partial Custer signature. "A. Custer" is legible. Two three cent stamps affixed. Archivist indicates 1874 in pencil. 7) Fragment of an envelope with a partial Custer signature. Only "ster" is legible. Three stamp affixed. 8) Fragment of an envelope with a partial Custer signature. Most of the top portions of "Custer" are legible. Postmarked Monroe. Three two cent stamps affixed. 9) Fragment of an envelope with a partial Custer signature. "enl" and "Custer" present. Portions of the Leavenworth, Kansas mailing address legible. Postmarked Chicago, Illinois and the remaining letters are legible. Three stamp affixed. 10) Fragment of an envelope from an unknown sender, addressed to "Geo A. Custer / [Fort] Lincoln / [D]akota Territory." "1876" penned near the top. A six cent stamp affixed. 11) Envelope addressed in Custer's hand to "O. H. Smith, Esqr / Canandaigua / N York." Postmarked Monroe, Michigan. May 28, no year indicated. 12) Envelope from an unknown sender addressed to "Miss Libbie Bacon / Care of Miss Annie Colton / Toledo / Ohio." Postmarked Monroe, Michigan.
