Auction: 336 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 1870
Custer, George Armstrong. Custer Autographed Envelope. About 2 3/4" by 4 1/2". Postmarked Elizabethtown, Kentucky. February 10, (1872). "72" is written in pencil by an archivist. The address is written by George Armstrong Custer in brown ink as follows: "No.80 Broadway / Louisville / Ky." At the bottom left Custer writes "For / Mrs. Genl Custer." The right side of the envelope is missing, barely affecting the address.
The Seventh Cavalry, worn out by fighting hostile Plains Indians, was assigned to various parts of the South to help control Carpet Baggers, early KKK activities, and illicit "moonshining." In September of 1871 Custer assumed command of two companies of the Seventh Cavalry posted in Elizabethtown, and remained there until 1873 when he was ordered to Dakota Territory.
