Massena, Andre (1758-1817). Marshal of France, Duc de Rivoli. Called by Napoleon "Enfant Cheri de la Victoire" (Victory's Favorite Son). In 1799, the Directory was beset with political and financial chaos in the interior, while the armies of Moreau, Schérer and Joubert were destitute and confronted by the combined forces of Russia and Austria. Massena commanded the army in Switzerland, serving as a link between the Army of the Rhine and the Army of Italy. Taking the offensive, Massena defeated Suwaroff at Zürich on Sept. 26, 1799. Autograph Letter Signed Massena as General en Chef of the Army in Switzerland. One page, folio, dated Choire (Chur) March 14, 1799. Armée Française en Helvétie letterhead. Addressing Citizen Minister (of War), Massena calls for his attention in the matter of a soldier's request. Clear, clean letter. Fine.
