Kellerman, François Étienne (1770-1835). Duc de Valmy, one of Napoleon's most brilliant cavalry commanders, noted for his daring and skillful exploits. His heroic charge decided the Battle of Marengo. On the eve of that battle, Napoleon made him a General of a Division, but never bestowed any other favors after - perhaps because Kellerman outshone Napoleon's dear friend Genereal Desaix at the battle. Despite their tensions, Kellerman joined Napoleon during the "Hundred Days" and was wounded at Waterloo. Autograph Letter Signed Kellerman. One page, folio, dated 27 brumaire An 9. Kellerman writes to Napoleon, General 1st Consul "I have the honor to send you a request for advancement to the rank of Chief of Battalion for Citizen Chouart, Captain, my Aide-de-Camp for several years. His gallantry, ardor and intelligence in combat and the promise that you were kind enough to give me concerning his advancement at the first occasion, let me hope that, in consideration of Maringo [sic], you would grant him the rank I am asking for him. Accept the assurance of my respect.. Trivial, unobtrusive tear at lower right edge. About Fine.
