Lhote, Andre (1885-1962). French artist, teacher, and writer on art. ALS. 2 pages. 1928. A fine letter mentioning Chagal, Cezane, Vollard, and defining his place in Cubism. "I really take pride in having been one of its promoters, along with Gleize, Metzinger, etc. My paintings prove it, as well as my participation in the first Cubist showings..." In his painting Lhote combined classic precision of composition and a free sensitive use of color. His greatest influence was exerted through his writings. Some minor edge splits, otherwise very good. From the Collection of John Herzog.
