Eichelberger, Robert Lawrence. Commander of the 8th US Army in the Southwest Pacific during WWII; named commander of 77th Infantry in March and the I Corps in June 1942, promoted to Lieutenant General in Oct.; after Gen. MacArthur ordered him to "take Buna, or don't come back alive," Eichelberger led the Australian-US Advanced New Guinea Force to victory over the Japanese at Buna-Guna in early '43; in '44, he had notable victories at Hollandia and Biak in Dutch New Guinea; led the invasion of Philippines, clearing the islands of Mindoro, Marinduque, Panay, Negros, Cebu and Bohol. Cover Signed "R L Eichelberger", Lt. Gen., as Censor. Postmarked June 20 1943 APO and addressed to Prof. C.W. Edwards, Duke University, Durham, NC.
