de Forest, Lee (1876-1961). "Father of radio and grandfather of television," American inventor with over 180 patents to his credit; invented the Audion in 1906, the first triode vacuum tube and first electrical device which could amplify a weak electrical signal and make it stronger - this and the tubes developed from it gave birth to the field of electronics and made radio broadcasting, television and long distance telephone calls possible; de Forest famously said "I discovered an invisible Empire of the Air, intangible, yet solid as granite." Autograph Signature "Lee de Forest". He signs in black ink across a Danish Statsradiofonien 25th Anniversary 20 Ore postage stamp. Very Fine and quite scarce.
