Civil War: Brown, Joseph E.. Governor of Georgia (1857-1865). A leading secessionist and firm believer in state's rights, Brown proved as vexing to CSA President Jefferson Davis, whom he called an incipient tyrant, as he did to the USA. He resisted the Confederate draft, and attempted to keep as many Georgia soldiers from leaving the state as possible. Autograph Document Signed "Joseph E. Brown". Four-page State of Georgia buff folio - printed and handwritten, Milledgeville, Ga, Dec. 10, 1863 (only two pages inscribed). The document concerns payments and fees for the distribution of an estate. Brown signs on the front along the left margin, by the blue ribbon tie. The Georgia Secretary of State, Nathan Crawford Barnett signs lower right. Embossed seal on both sheets. Some paper nicking left and right sides, light foxing. Very Good.
