Woodbury, Levi (1789-1851). U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1834-1841), Governor of New Hampshire, Secretary of the Navy, Senator for New Hampshire and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Official Calligraphic Copy of Letter from Secretary of the Treasury Woodbury to President Martin Van Buren, May 26, 1837. Two-pages on folio, handwritten copy notes that government officers must make deposits only in those banks that comply with the Specie Circular of July 11, 1836, and gives detailed instruction in this regard. Two postscripts "Approved" by Van Buren and War Dept. clerk with reference "to the chiefs of the different disbursing bureaus who will instruct the agents accordingly". An interesting document from the Hard Times era, which began shortly before this copy was penned. No autograph of Van Buren or Woodbury. Margins trimmed in recent times, otherwise Very Fine.
