Civil War: Du Pont, Henry Algernon (1838-1926). Soldier, businessman and Delaware politician; served in the Civil War -- early on as 1st Lieutenant with the 5th Regiment, initially as a light artillery officer assigned the defense of Washington and New York harbor, regimental adjutant from July 6, 1861 to March 24, 1864 when he was promoted to captain, becoming chief of artillery in the Army of West Virginia; was part of Sheridan's army in the Shenandoah Valley; awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his distinguished service and gallantry at the Battle of Cedar Creek which helped Sheridan emerge victorious, brevetted to major for his gallant service in the battles of Opequan and Fisher's Hill, and to lieutenant colonel for Cedar Creek. Autograph Document Signed "HA Du Pont" as Captain, Commanding. Honorable Discharge Document of Daniel Holmes, a private of Captain H.A. Du Pont's Battery 'B' of the Fifth regiment of Artillery, October 13, 1864. One page on vellum, ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES (eagle) header, printed with pertinent information handwritten. Du Pont signs at mid-bottom and again below in the "CHARACTER" section, noting Holmes' to be "Very good". Paymaster notation in blue ink upper left; Bounty Paid stamp upper right. Battles in which Holmes served noted in black ink on back, notation in mid-back panel adjacent to printed Oath of Identity panel. Good Fine.
