Wells, Henry; American Express, Wells Fargo. American businessman; after serving as a freight agent on the Erie Canal in 1836, Wells (1805-1878) went into business for himself, establishing Wells & Company's Western Express in 1845 with William Fargo and Daniel Dunning, then forming American Express in 1850 as a consolidation of companies of which he was part; organized Wells, Fargo & Co. two years later to offer services in California; and Fargo, William (1818-1881). Pioneer American expressman, mayor of Buffalo, NY (1862-1866) and president of American Express (1868-1881). Autograph Document Signed "Henry Wells" as company president, and "Wm E. Fargo" as secretary. Certificate for one share of the American Express Company, January 7, 1862 issued to "Amos B. Falkinburgh of Jersey City". Handsome vignette with "Safety & Dispatch" logo.
