Hopkinson, Frances. Author and songwriter, signer of the Declaration of Independence as delegate from New Jersey to the Second Continental Congress, Treasurer of the Continental Loan Office (1778-1779), Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Pennsylvania (1789-1791), designer of the American flag. Autograph Document Signed "F. Hopkinson" as Treasurer of the Continental Loan Office. Printed United States of America Note for 120 Dollars payable to David Chambers, Feb. 10, 1779. Thirty days sight third bill, 8 3/8 x 3 ¾". Signed by Hopkinson lower right, countersigned by "Tho. Smith" Commissioner of the Continental Loan Office lower left. Handwritten notice in French on verso, dated July 12, 1779 and signed by William Bingham. A statesman from Philadelphia, Bingham served as a delegate from Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress, later as president pro tempore of the Senate, and U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania; he was also a land surveyor (the city of Binghamton, NY is named in his honor). Bright note, bold ink signatures and inscriptions; Very Fine. Accompanied by an engraving of Hopkinson and illustration of Declaration of Independence signatures.
