Hayes, Rutherford B Nineteenth President of the United States (1822-93, served 1877-81); elected over Samuel J Tilden when a special commission awarded him 20 disputed electoral votes; in a compromise to end Democratic opposition to the outcome, he agreed to end Reconstruction. Pair of partly engraved Documents Signed "RB Hayes" as Governor of Ohio, each 1 page, folio, Columbus, October 15, 1869, and October 13, 1871. In each, he commissions William A Evans sheriff of Miami County. Each bears a lovely engraved vignette incorporating the Ohio state seal. Both with folds, 1871 with additional soiling and some offsetting, both VG. [2]
