1872 (1888) American Society of Civil Engineers - Norman Medal in Gold. Julian AM-9. 44mm/70.9gms. Awarded to Edward Ernest Russell Tratman. By: H. Mitchell and H. Billings. Obv: Allegorical woman seated reading scrolled draft papers, surveying tool at side, book at base; bridge in background with train exiting tunnel. Rev: Award classification around legends with winner and year at center. An unquestionably rare U.S. Mint medal struck and awarded annually to the best "essay on engineering". Nicely preserved with no major surface marks and light hairlines in the fields that primarily confine themselves to the reverse centers. Research indicates Tratman was heavily integrated into railway track construction and mechanics and in his later years published numerous relevant works including Railway Track and Track Work.ex. 1959 Hans Schulman and Abner Kreisberg Auction, Lot 2558.Originating from a grant by George H. Norman, The American Society of Civil Engineers, in 1872 began issuing the "Norman Medal" award in recognition of the paper that made the largest contribution to engineering science. Julian notes that "The Norman medal for the ASCE was struck in gold, beginning in 1875. There was none struck from 1876 to 1878, but after that there was usually one made per year." The award continues to be issued to this day.
