1869 Pacific Railway Completion Silver Medal. Select Proof. Julian CM-39. HK-12a. 45mm/37.54gms. By: William Barber. Obv: Bust of Grant facing right; "The Oceans United by Railway / May 10, 1869." in exergue. Rev: Train traveling eastward with mountains in background; "Medal Series of the U.S. Mint." in exergue. A desirable So-Called Dollar that was struck to commemorate the meeting of the Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. The surfaces remain deeply reflective and have toned darkly in mixed charcoal and oil-slick shades after a certain multi-decade residence in its box of issue. Light hairlines are evident but have minuscule effect on the eye appeal. A significant offering for the collector of U.S. Mint medals or So-Called Dollars.
