Lieutenant Colonel George Beresford Lempriere, born Gillingham, Kent in 1858, entered the 77th Foot (from Militia) as 2nd Lieutenant 1879, advanced to Lieutenant the following year and rose to Major 1898. In the South Africa War 1899-1902 he took part in the relief of Ladysmith, the action at Spion Kop and Vaal Kranz, operations on the Tugela and action of Peter's Hill; operations on the Transvaal in June 1900; operations in Natal March to June 1900 including the action at Laing's Nek; further operations in the Transvaal July 1900 to August 1901 and operations on the Zululand Frontier of Natal, September and October 1901 (Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 8.2. and 10.9.1901; Brevet of Lieut. Colonel)
