Captain James Frederick Richie born 1872, entered the 19th Hussars as 2nd Lieutenant (from Militia) 1894, transferred to the Derby Regiment and 1896, was advanced to Lieutenant 1897. He accompanied the 2nd Battalion of his Regiment to the North-West Frontier and during the Tirah operations 1897-98 took part in the action at Dargai and the capture of the Sampagha and the Arhanga Passes. During the South Africa War 1899-1901 he was advanced to Captain employed with the Mounted Infantry and was sometime attached to the Army Service Corps.
