Captain Stradling Louis Vaughn Crealock (1859-1900), born Kensington, London 1859, attested for service in the ranks 30.6.1879 aged 19 years, and according to Crealock's 'Record of Service' spent five years 82 days with the 45th Regiment. Promoted from the ranks he was commissioned Lieutenant, Somerset Light Infantry 26.9.1884 and advanced to Captain 1890. Captain Crealock was killed in action after the crossing of the Tugela by Buller's Brigade 21.2.1900. The unforseen Boer 'rearguard' action cost the Somerset 90 casualties including four officers killed. (The Times History of the War in South Africa refers)
