Four: Colonel C.H.W. Cafe, Royal Sussex Regiment, Commanded the 2nd Battalion on the North-West Frontier.
Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated (Capt: 1/R.Sus...); India General Service 1895-1902, two clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Tirah 1897-98 (Lieut. Colonel 2d Bn Ryl Suss Regt); Khedive's Star 1882; Coronation 1911, contact marks from Star to campaign medals otherwise nearly very fine or better, mounted as originally worn (4)

Colonel Charles Haydon Wilkinson Cafe (1851-1929), born in Winchester, entered the 35th Foot as an Ensign 28.10.1871 and Gazetted Lieutenant the same day. Advanced to Captain 1880, he served in the Egyptian War of 1882 until the Ist Battalion of his regiment and was present at the defence of Alexandria, the surrender of Kafr-Dowar and Domietta and the occupation of Damanhour. Returning from Egypt 1884 to Chichester he became Major and Adjutant of the Regimental District for two years and then occupied the Adjutancy of the 1st Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteer Corps until 1891 when he rejoined the 1st Battalion of his parent regiment. He proceeded to India as Lieutenant Colonel in 1895 to command the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex on the North West Frontier and led them in the Tirah Campaign and operations in the Bazar Valley (Mentioned in Despatches; Brevet of Colonel). He returned to England after his four year command and during the Boer War period commanded the Royal Eastern Reserve Regiment until 1901. After his retirement in June 1903 he accepted the command of the 5th (Cinque Ports), Royal Sussex Regiment and after three extensions of command finally retired under the age clause.
