Major-General William Henry Dowling Reeves Welman, C.B. (1828-1906), born Deptford, Kent, entered the 99th Foot as Ensign 1847 and after service in Australia, India, China and the Cape of Good Hope had risen to Lieutenant Colonel. He accompanied his Regiment to Natal in December 1877, served with them throughout the Zulu Campaign, was present in the action at Inyezane, 22nd January and during the investment and relief of Ekowe (Brevet of Colonel, March 1880, C.B. for services in the Field during the Zulu War; Mentioned in Despatches, London Gazette, 16.5.1879); he retired in 1882 with the rank of Major-General and died at his residence in Godalming, 1906.
