An Interesting K.C.B. Group of Four to Sir G. V. Fiddes, Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, Late Private Secretary to Lord Milner, the Great British Statesman and Political Secretary to Field Marshal Lord Roberts, Commander-in-Chief South Africa.
Order of the Bath, Knight Commander's set of insignia (K.C.B.), Civil Division, neck Badge, makers' marks and sterling marks only, silver-gilt and enamel, Star, silver, silver-gilt and enamel: Queen's South Africa, no clasps (G. V. Fiddes, C.B., Esq. Secty. to C.C.); Coronation 1902; Coronation 1911, the Coronation 1902 medal cut and worn, otherwise the group good very fine or better

Sir George Vandaleur Fiddes, [G.C.M.G.], K.C.B. (1858-1936), entered the Colonial Office in 1881 and within five years served as Private Secretary to the Earl of Onslow, Lord Pirbright and Hon. Sir R. Meade; appointed Private Secretary to Lord Milner, High Commissioner for South Africa, 1900, and Secretary to Transvaal Colony, 1901-02 (C.B. 1901, Colonies in 1916 (K.C.M.G. 1912). Sir George, recognised as one of the ablest civil servants of his time, retired in 1921 (G.C.M.G. 1917, K.C.B. 1919), and died in Bournemouth, 1936.
