Zouaves: Discharge, Sash, and Photograph Gorgeous deluxe partly-engraved DS by Col. "Gouverneur Carr" and Lieut. "Will Sinclair," 1p, large folio, [NY], 9/1/1865, certifying that "Frank Kochendoerfer, Private, Comp´y. C, 165th Regiment N.Y. Vols., 2nd Duryea Zouaves Served faithfully as a Soldier in the U.S.A. in the War of the Rebellion And was honorably discharged after Three years Service." At bottom center is a list of the battles in which he fought, including Port Hudson, Winchester, and Cedar Creek. A color vignette at top shows Liberty holding the US flag and a sword, the Capitol, the US Constitution, and Union soldiers marching; at left, an American eagle perches atop an easel supported by muskets, upon which is tipped a 3.5" x 2.75" albumen Photograph of Kochendoerfer in his dashing Zouave uniform. At upper left is part of his maroon Sash with gold braid tassels. All are contained under glass in a modern gilt wooden frame, overall size ca. 19.5" x 23.5". Age-toned; photograph slightly faded, but still very clear. Overall VG and a fine item for display. Estimate US$ 750-1,000
