Lot: 2412

Postal Fraud
1851 (31 Oct.) envelope registered to Bakewell bearing eight 1841-54 1d. red-brown, each previously cancelled, each cancelled by indistinct "64" numerals of Belper with a fine strike of the despatch c.d.s. alongside and Bakewell arrival on reverse for the same day. An astonishing attempt to get away with such a haphazard array of stamps. Photo

The stamps on this cover are plate 91, HD (previously franked with blue numeral), plate 98, QD (previously stamped), plate 104, KC-KD pair (previously franked by Scottish numeral), plate 111, BE (previously stamped), plate 112, LB (previously stamped), plate 121, MG (previously franked) and plate 125 (previously cancelled with blue numeral). Some of the stamps show some fading due to treatment to reduce the original cancellation
