PA in a greyish shade, good to large margin all round. 1840 (8 July) entire letter from Demerara, British Guiana, addressed to London and carried "pr Royalist to Weymouth" and rated "8", redirected on arrival to St. Hellier, Jersey where the Penny Black was added, tied by a good red Maltese Cross; the flap bearing "liverpool/ship letter" handstruck "S", London c.d.s. and Lombard Street datestamp. A highly important cover which is thought to be the only letter from British Guiana bearing a Penny Black. Photo

It is believed that this letter missed the 'Royalist' and was sent on the next ship, the 'Demerara'
