EH, small to large margins and used on 1840 (31 Aug.) entire letter to Chelmsford; the adhesive with torn upper left corner and cancelled by black Maltese Cross (the first day of this experimental colour with two strikes of the London datestamp on the reverse. The letter is wonderfully illustrated with two pages of ink sketches including Dover Harbour, Albion Brewery, Sun Rise and some amusing word plays and comes from an original correspondence of illustrated letters. Believed to be one of only seven recorded covers in private hands used on the first day of the experimental black Maltese Cross. Photo
