Sussex and Surrey: A selection with Battle: 1840 (5 June) entire letter from Edward Curteis of Mill Hill Place to Rye, marked "P P" and "X post" bearing a superb strike of "Paid 1d." in orange-red, the flap with a large part strike of Battle c.d.s.; there are two vertical filing folds. An interesting and rare cover, this type not recorded (by Willcocks & Jay); the circular type recorded for Battle is found in 1843. Brighton: 1847 (8 Jan.) large entire to London marked "Free" and bearing a good but faint strike of "Pd2" in oval, partly overstruck by London Paid tombstone with the despatch and arrival datestamps on the reverse; vertical folding creases; a late date of use. Also 1840 (11 Mar.) entire to London bearing a fine strike of "Pd1" in oval, London Paid tombstone and the despatch c.d.s. on the flap (two vertical filing creases). Hastings: 1847 (18 Dec.) wrapper to London with a good strike of the "paid/1d" with overlapping despatch and arrival c.d.s. alongside, delayed at the Post Office with further despatch c.d.s. on the reverse (19.12); heavy horizontal filing crease and some soiling. Robertsbridge: 1840 (17 Feb.) entire letter to Rye, marked "Paid" and bearing a very fine strike of the large "P.1" in red and a very faint despatch c.d.s. on the reverse; a couple of light vertical folding creases; fresh and fine. Surrey with Chertsey: 1840 (22 Sept.) entire to Bagshot bearing a fine strike of italic "Penny Pd" in red, a fine strike of the despatch c.d.s. is on the flap; light horizontal filing fold. Guildford: 1840 (6 Nov.) entire to Rochester bearing a fine strike of fancy "P1" partly overstruck by London Paid tombstone, the flap with a faint despatch c.d.s.; fresh and fine. (7 covers)
