Uniform Penny Post Handstamps
Kent: A selection with Cranbrook: 1840 (1 Dec.) entire letter to Rye bearing a very good strike of the "1 paid" handstamp in red with the despatch c.d.s. on the reverse; two light vertical folds; clean and fine. Biddenham (Kent): 1841 (18 June) entire to Rye bearing a fine strike of the "P 1" in magenta, the reverse with Biddenham undated circle, Cranbrook and Rye c.d.s.; two vertical filing creases; also 1844 16 June) entire to Maidstone with a similar strike of "P 1" in magenta, with Biddenham undated circle and Cranbrook c.d.s., the arrival is on the reverse (a little grubby). Lamberhurst: 1842 (16 Apr.) small wrapper to Tunbridge bearing a neat strike of the "paid/1d." with the despatch c.d.s. alongside and the arrival c.d.s. on the flap which opens well for display; some light soiling. Langton Green: 1842 (7 Feb.) entire letter to Tonbridge bearing a very fine strike of undated Langton Green circular postmark with manuscript "Paid/1" in centre, alongside with the Tunbridge Wells "paid.1d.", the reverse with Tonbridge Wells and Tunbridge c.d.s.; horizontal filing crease, an appealing cover; also 1846 (29 Oct.) wrapper to Rye bearing a fine strike of Langton Green undated circle with manuscript "Pd/1" in red ink with Tonbridge Wells transit at left and Rye arrival on the reverse; vertical creases, Good examples of these scarce markings. Maidstone: 1840 (22 Aug.) wrapper to Cavendish Square bearing a very fine strike of the fancy "P1" with overlapping despatch and arrival datestamps alongside; vertical folds; also 1851 (9 June) "Prepaid" entire to Essex bearing a light strike of the "P1" handstamp with the despatch and London c.d.s. on the face; vertical fold. Tonbridge: 1840 (14 Apr.) wrapper bearing a fine strike of the first type "Pd.1" (sloping "1") in red, with the despatch c.d.s. at left, partly overstruck by London Paid tombstone with a fine strike of large "P1" in black alongside, the address has been removed and replaced by an imitation, very unusual cover bearing two Penny Post handstamps; plus 1840-50 a group of covers, each showing a different handstamp with 1840 "Pd. 1d", a superb strike in red (a very early date for this); 1845 "P. 1d." (an early date); 1850 sans serif "Pd. 1d." and 1850 sans serif "P, 1d,". Tunbridge Wells: 1840 (4 Nov.) entire letter to London bearing a fine strike of the "Paid.1d." with capital "D" in "1D", London Paid tombstone below and the despatch c.d.s. on the flap which opens well for display; some light creasing and soiling but a very early date for this handstamp.
