Uniform Penny Post Handstamps
1840-53, a superb collection (c. 80+ covers) from the Northern counties including Cumberland and Durham with 1840 to Penrith and another to Newcastle and 1843 to Lockerbie, each bearing the circular "carlisle/1/paid" with the "1" between "L" and "I", 1847 (13 Mar.) neat entire to London bearing a crisp but light strike of the open-circle "paid/1" in magenta with undated Ireby, Whitehaven 1840 (14 May) neat wrapper to Edinburgh with the large handstruck "1" with the despatch and arrival c.d.s. alongside, Darlington (Durham): 1846-47, two entires showing the large handstruck "1" with 1846 (12 Jan.) to London with a superb strike of the handstamp, with despatch c.d.s. and smudged London arrival; Lancashire with 1848 (7 Mar.) local blue Railway envelope bearing a very fine strike of "paid/1" in circle in a brownish red with Blackburn c.d.s. at left, 1847 (22 Dec.) entire letter from Bolton to Lancaster bearing a very fine strike of "paid/1" in circle with the despatch c.d.s. in bluish at left, the arrival is on the reverse, 1850 (4 May) a small envelope from Burnley to Oxford bearing a very good strike of the "burnley/1d/paid" in oval; Staffordshire with Newcastle-under-Lyne: 1840-46, a group of entires showing different types of "Pd.1" handstamp, the first example is dated 1840 (24 Oct.) which is an early date for this handstamp, 1843 with the sans-serif "1" and thinner types used in 1846, one in black, West Bromwich group with "paid/one/penny" in oval; Yorkshire with Beverley 1843-48 group bearing handstruck "1d", various from Bradford with "paid/one/penny", square "Paid/1d.", double-frame "Paid/1d"; Halifax, various types of "Pd1", "1d" and 1845-46 "paid/d/1"; a wide range of York with "york/1d/paid", York "1d." in circle, York "2d." in circle, handstruck "2" in black and in bluish, Also Forwarded Mail with 1853 (10 Nov.) "OHMS" entire to Craike, redirected to Easingwold (manuscript "2" applied, then sent to York with the handstruck "2d" in circle in black applied and crossed through, with York transit c.d.s. Condition as expected, fine in places and a valuable collection.
