Edward III (1327-1377), Fourth Coinage, Pre-Treaty Period, Noble, 1356-1361, Series Ga, Tower (London), E | DWARD 'x DEI x GRA x ANGL 'x 7 x FRANC x D hY:B, saltire stops, closed E, Roman reverse-barred Ns, scroll-tailed R, King standing in ship, brandishing long sword and Royal shield set with semé of three fleurs in first quarter, wearing Royal jupon over brigandine armour, rerebrace, couter and gauntlet visible on sword arm, chain mail draping below, ropes 3/1, quatrefoils 4/4, bow-sprit through foc'sul, ornaments 1-1-1-1, leopards facing left, rev. (i.m.) IhE 'x AVTEM x TRANCIENS : P 'x MEDIVM x ILLOREVM x IBAT, saltire stops, floriate cross, crowned leopards in angles, with additional lys in second quarter and small broken annulets flanking upper lys, small closed E at centre, 7.65g [118.06grns], 9h, i.m. cross pattée (Doubleday -/99; Schneider I, cf. 46; North 1183; S.1490), struck from heavily used dies showing characteristic flatness and softer details, with a rim furl at 11 o'clock and scuffing to reverse, otherwise a bolder fine to almost very fine, an unusual reverse die not known to Doubleday
