M.M. London Gazette 11 November 1916. The original citation, together with two other Royal Engineers, forwarded in June 1916, states:
'For consistent good work since March 1915 during which time they have shown great resource and initiative in the execution of their duty.'

William Norman Herbert Freeman was born on 8 December 1888 at Blackwell, Worcestershire, his family being the proprietors of Freeman's Commercial Temperance Hotel on Corporation Street, Chesterfield. A carpenter by trade, he was working at Maresfield Park, Sussex in 1921 and living in Chelmsford by the time of the Second World War. Freeman died in Yarmouth, Norfolk in January 1959.
