A Great War M.S.M. group of six awarded to Colour Sergeant Major S. G. Blythe, Royal Marines Artillery

R.M.A. Prize Gun's Crew. H.M.S. Ocean 1902.) engraved, some contact marks and edge bruising to the last, otherwise good very fine (6)

Samuel George Bythe was born at Croydon on 11 September 1880 and was a railway clerk before he enlisted into the Royal Marines Artillery on 2 July 1898. He served on Ocean between 23 November 1900 - 11 May 1903 and Implacable between 9 September 1904 - 9 July 1906. Blythe briefly served on Mars between 18 July 1907 - 22 June 1908 before serving on Russell between 23 June 1908 - 21 March 1910 and by now had reached the rank of Sergeant. He served on Hindustan between 12 November 1910 - 17 April 1916 before he served on Royal Sovereign from 18 April 1916 - 11 October 1918 and was promoted to Colour Sergeant. Blythe was promoted to Colour Sergeant Major on 1 January 1919 and served with the Royal Marines Artillery and the 6th Royal Marines Battery until he was demobilised on 6 February 1920.

The award of the Blue Jacket Medal was for H.M.S. Ocean which fired a 6 inch gun firing 9 rounds with 9 hits in 1 minute, a silver medal was awarded to Gunner F. Skein, Royal Marines Artillery as well as bronze medals (8 medals assumed given) to other crew including Blythe.
