Harry Leonard Dawson was born on 5 December 1854 and was the son of the Major General John Dawson, Indian Staff Corps. He was educated at Cheltenham College and entered the Army serving originally as a Lieutenant with the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment from 12 November 1873. Transferring to the Bengal Staff Corps in 1880 Dawson served on the Soudan Expedition of 1885. Whilst there he took part in the action of Hasheen and operations at Tamai with the Bengal Cavalry.
He then served in India and joined the Operations in Chitral 1895 serving with the Relief Force and before joining the action in Tirah. Dawson then served in Command of Robert's Horse from 12 February-15 March 1900 before serving on the Staff with the Central India Horse. He led the Indian Coronation Contingent for the 1902 Coronation and received the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) and the Coronation 1902 medal for his services. The part he played is various mentioned in Sardar Bahadur Shaikh Farid's work My Coronation Visit to London, including his translation of The King's speech into Urdu for his troops. Retired in 1907, he lived at Rosemead, Horley, Surrey. Dawson died in January 1920 and is buried in Acton Cemetery, London.
